Rosemaling comes from Norway. Rosemåling, or rosemaling, is Norwegian for "decorative painting. It flourished there from about 1700 to 1850. Hundreds of beautiful old rosemalings are preserved in the homes, museums, and churches of Norway. Many have found their way to the US to grace homes and museums. These rosemalings are on the beautiful old wooden trunks brought here by immigrants, on furniture, bowls, and any wooden surface the rosemaler had on hand. Beautiful examples of the old rosemalings are on display at the Norwegian American Museum in Iowa. Also on display are excellent rosemalings by contemporary Norwegian and American artists. Available to the serious student of rosemaling, here are several hundred patterns. Read more
