Review & Description

Walker Evans’s iconic photograph of Ellie Mae Burroughs of Hale County, Alabama, made while he was working with James Agee, has become a memorable symbol of the Great Depression. How it came to be, and what consequences it provoked, make for a fascinating tale.

---

Although the Great Depression brought suffering to the cities in equal measure, the images of rural poverty and despair remain the more searing memories of the worst economic collapse in American history. This is largely due to the small band of photographers who recorded the miseries of the poor, under the auspices of the New Deal’s Farm Security Administration. Notable among them were Margaret Bourke-White, Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, and Walker Evans. The story that Jerry Thompson tells here is of Evans’s iconic photograph of Ellie Mae Burroughs of Hale County, Alabama. Evans made it while working with James Agee on assignment from Fortune magazine. It is not only a great picture technically but has become a memorable symbol of difficult times.

--

Jerry L. Thompson is a working photographer who occasionally writes about photography. During the last three years of Walker Evans’s life he was Evans’s principal assistant and, for a time, printer of photographs. He lived with Evans off and on from late 1972 until Evans’s death in April 1975. From 1973 until 1980 he was a member of the faculty of Yale University. Thompson has also written The Last Years of Walker Evans; a book of essays, Truth and Photography; and the introduction to Walker Evans at Work. He lives in Amenia, New York. Read more

FACE2FAITH - A spiritual journey through paint (Kindle Edition)

FACE2FAITH - A spiritual journey through paint
FACE2FAITH - A spiritual journey through paint (Kindle Edition)
By Jenni Eden

Review & Description

This is a book packed with amazing information. Not only does it cover subjects like the Law of Attraction, manifesting, visualizing, and faith, but it has over 50 full colour and vibrant illustrations, too. I have had a most amazing journey since I returned to painting in 2003. The Universe guided, protected, nurtured me, and gave me information on how to achieve my dreams as well as align me to people who could also help me with my goals and dreams. I now live a most charming life. I am doing all that I hoped I would do when I was a young girl with aspirations. I am singing professionally with a band-123 Orion. I am painting, exhibiting and selling my art. I am inspiring and motivating others to follow their dreams through my Planting Positivity workshops. I am building up people's self esteem, confidence, imagination, creativity and vocal projection through my 'DeRigours' Drama groups, and I am helping others find out what their passions and dreams are through my workshop- ArtsSpa.
I am thrilled. It has taken a long time to get here, and I lost the young girl with aspirations for fourteen years, because conformity and other people's perception of 'proper' and 'real' buried her totally. However, having found her again I knew I could not look back, I knew I had to do all I could to follow my dream and keep her alive.
Initially my dream was to be a hugely successful Artist, selling my work for ridiculously large sums of money and travelling all over the world for inspiration. Then I realised my purpose was something else, something more. I realised my purpose was to help others, and as many others as I could, to find the courage and confidence to follow their dreams too.In 2007, when I was in a state of gratitude for all the marvelous things that had happened, all the wonderful gifts I felt I had been given and more importantly for all the guidance I had received from the Universe, I was asked, by this source not to keep things to myself, but to share it with others. That is the reason I wrote FACE2FAITH
It is not a book about religion; but it is a book about faith. It is a personal recount of how I managed to become successful. Documented in this book are the opportunities and successes that came my way when I finally tapped into what I always loved and followed my dreams. I believe this book will encourage you and show you some of the ways that you can bring yourself into alignment and how you can begin to find and follow your dreams.
We are all special; we are all looked after and protected. When we can realise this fact, we can begin to let go of the fear, the limiting beliefs and the doubts that have held us back.Throughout the book, my artwork stands out as examples of certain projects or as visual representations of the thoughts and feelings I have experienced.
I believe the words and the pictures help to encourage you that whatever it is you have inside it is worth tapping into it and using your God given talents to begin creating your dream life. You are never too late.

By Elliott Erwitt

Review & Description

In the persona of Andre S. Solidor, veteran photographer Elliott Erwitt plunges deeply into the kookier excesses of contemporary photography. Connotation, denotation, "relevance," Andre S. Solidor's "best masterpiece to date" features an "exuberantly eclectic" selection of topics--smoking fish heads, pneumatic mannequins in inconguous poses, not to mention some "up-close and personal" shots of Solidor himself. Plus for all you postmodernist groupies out these, there's context and commentary galore. Did we mention the gratuitous nudity? Read more

Saving Gerda (Kindle Edition)

Saving Gerda
Saving Gerda (Kindle Edition)
By Lilian Darcy

Review & Description

From bestselling author and four-time Rita™ Award finalist Lilian Darcy comes a “powerful and unforgettable” new novel...

Gerda was nine years old when she first learned that she was the descendent of swans.
At almost six-thirty, Gerda still hadn’t come down from the attic. Kitty decided it was time, therefore, for her to go up. For a long time she’d had a half-unconscious prayer that God would let her live a selfish life, not a life in which she had to be courageous in order to be good. She wasn’t strong enough for that. She wanted everything to be easier. This was such a little thing, to investigate Gerda’s activities in the attic, but still it pushed her farther than she wanted to go.
The stairs were narrow and steep. There was no door at the top. The long pull cord that switched on the lights brushed past her ear as she climbed the final step and she thought of bats and starlings. “Gerda, are you here?”
There was a small silence, as if Gerda was considering whether it would be possible to withhold a reply, but then, “Yes, Mama.”
“Where, then?”
“Over by the window.”
Kitty saw movement and picked her way towards it. They met beside a horsehair-covered trunk. An overall Gerda had borrowed from the kitchen was smeared with brownish dust, and wisps of hair escaped from her Gretchen braids like a halo. She looked quite dazed, almost drunk, other worldly and newly aware in a way that made Kitty suddenly wonder if she’d found something unsuitable up here…

Out of the smoke and shattered glass of Nazi Germany’s Kristallnacht in November 1938, two families in impossibly different circumstances become linked by tangled bonds. Can Kitty draw something from this dangerous new relationship that could save her precious child?

“A magnificent story…couldn't put it down.” - Jane Porter, bestselling author of Flirting With Forty

“I adored this book.” - Trish Morey, Harlequin Presents author and 2012 Rita Finalist for Best Novella.

“A brilliant book.” - Barbara Hannay, Rita Award winner and author of Zoe’s Muster from Penguin Books.

“Stunning book... My eyes are filling up as I type this.” - Liz Fielding, multi-award-winning author of “Liz Fielding’s Little Book of Writing Romance” from Amazon. Read more

    Review & Description

Gilli Allan writes unconventional romantic fiction for grown-ups

    LIFE CLASS.
Dory works in the sex trade, the clean-up end. She deals with the damage caused. Her job has given her a jaundiced view of men and relationships. Always a clear eyed realist, she suddenly finds herself chasing a dream.

Stefan is a single-minded loner, his sole ambition is to make a living from his art. So how did he find himself facing a class of adults who want their old teacher back? Love is an emotion he long ago closed off, but is it time to let others into his life?

Fran (Dory's older sister) is a stay-at-home mother without enough to keep her occupied. She is on a collision course with her mid-life crisis. Her craving for the excitement and romance of her youth puts everything she really loves now at risk.

Dominic is a damaged child. He knows all about sex but nothing about love. He wants to make sense of the past, but maybe it's time to look to the future. If he can accept the love and help on offer, perhaps he has a chance to transform his life.

Four people meet once a week to draw the human figure. All have failed to achieve what they thought they wanted in life. They come to realise that it’s not just the naked model they need to study and understand. Their stories are very different, but they all have secrets they hide from the world and from themselves. By uncovering and coming to terms with the past, maybe they can move on to an unimagined future. Read more
